Night 2 Sacred and Profane
Sacred & Profane is a piece I initially created in 2010 for Women’s Works (see “Selected Performance Work” in CV) in response to a criticism that my flamenco-belly fusion work “went back and forth between the sacred and profane.” I wondered at this remark (and the critic who made it) and this piece grew out of the frustration and sadness that our culture finds sensuality “profane.” Here, I begin with the recitation of the poem, “Sheila Na Gig at Kilpeck” by Welsh poet, Gillian Clarke, which honors the pre-Christian land-associated goddess. I chose to keep the geography of the piece contained, as both of these idioms are traditionally confined in the space they take up, and this is an intimate journey, all taking place within the confines of one’s own skin..
